Now that weather has gotten better (it can still be freezing in the early morning) I've started to bring out my ferrets for longer periods.
I brought Kimber out to a stand of trees in an open field and just sat down there. She was slightly nervous at first, but just by being in the situation calmed her down. After a while she climbed up on me and lay down to rest. After 15 minutes or so, she wanted to go home and she did and for once she didn't rush over the open space. Having observed it over a longer period of time it obviously wasn't scary any more.
